Refer to the NBC News: The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and UnionPay International (UPI) at officially launched the “Phase 2: Bakong Outward Cross-Border Payment (Bakong scans UnionPay)” between the National Bank of Cambodia’s Bakong Payment System and UPI‘s payment network UnionPay on March 10, 2025 at the National Bank of Cambodia, Sen Sok Building.
The official launch was presided over H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia and attended by Mr. Larry Wang, CEO and Deputy Chairman of UPI, Mr. Ho Wai Man, General Manager of Bank of China Credit Card (International) Ltd, and representatives of Chinese Embassy in Cambodia as well as relevant institutions including the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC), the Cambodia Microfinance Association (CMA), Cambodian Association of Finance and Technology (CAFT), international payment network companies and banking and microfinance institutions, totally, 245 people.
The official launch of phase 2 will allow Cambodian people to make a cross-border payment by scanning the UnionPay QR Code in China and other countries and QR Code WeChat Pay. This initiative offers the opportunity to enhance trade, boost tourism, facilitate cross-border payments and remittances, and promote the use of local currency and financial inclusion. Therefore, it will contribute to the sustainable economic growth.
