Khmer Times News: Khmer Riel (KHR) was launched for currency trading on the list at the Travelex’s money exchange counters in the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport in China on Tuesday.
The launch ceremony was presided over by Kunthea Ngin, Director of Foreign Exchange Management Department and Sophea Eng, Director of Banking Services Department, with the cooperation between the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and Travelex and support from the Chongqing Airport Authority.
“The listing of KHR would enable Chinese tourists who visit Cambodia to convert Chinese currency to KHR easily and vice versa for Cambodian tourists who visit China. It will help attract more Chinese tourists to visit Cambodia, especially those who fly directly between Phnom Penh and Chongqing,” NBC said in a statement.
The move also indicates that KHR is available for trading in the international market and reflects the rising confidence and acknowledgement of the currency, which is the outcome of the efforts made by the National Bank of Cambodia in maintaining the KHR stability for the last two decades, the central bank added.
This is the third time that Travelex has cooperated with the National Bank of Cambodia to list KHR in its currency trading lists at international financial hubs following the listings at the Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, in April 2024 and Singapore’s Changi International Airport in 2023.
The National Bank of Cambodia keeps exploring possibilities to place KHR in currency trading lists at other financial hubs in China and the rest of the world.
