Debt Situation in Cambodia

According to a release from the Cambodia Microfinance Association: As of the end of 2024, Cambodians used loans in the banking and financial sector to the tune of nearly 60 billion US Dollars (60 billion). Meanwhile, according to the National Bank of Cambodia’s 2024 data, customer deposits in the banking and financial sector increased to 57 billion US Dollars (57 billion). For the changes in 2023 and 2024, loans grew by only 3%, while deposits grew by 16.3%.

Debt or credit is not all bad, and credit in Cambodia is extended to customers in different sectors (diversification), such as retail trade, buying and selling houses for personal use, real estate trading, personal loans, construction, agriculture, forestry and fishing, wholesale trade, manufacturing, hotels and restaurants, and others. We see that debt or credit in Phnom Penh, Kandal and Siem Reap provinces are high, possibly due to these areas being a cluster of economic activities and having a large population.
